Red Wing vs Thorogood

Red Wing vs Thorogood

Both are American and welted. Only one of them makes a boot you can wear on most jobsites.

By Mike M.Published How we pick

This is the most common brand question in American work footwear, and it usually gets answered as a quality debate when the real answer is a category difference. Red Wing Heritage and Thorogood American Heritage look similar, are both US-made and both welted - and one line is built as workwear-inspired heritage footwear while the other is built as work boots.

The difference that decides it

Thorogood's American Heritage line is available with a steel toe, carries ASTM F2413 ratings, and includes waterproof variants. Red Wing's Heritage line - the Iron Ranger, Blacksmith, Moc Toe - is overwhelmingly soft toe with no ASTM rating at all. Red Wing does make genuine safety boots under its Red Wing Shoes work line, but those are different products from the Heritage boots people are usually comparing.

If your site requires protective footwear, a Heritage Iron Ranger will get you sent home. That makes this an easy decision for most people reading, and it is worth checking your own requirement first: ASTM F2413 safety ratings explained.

Our score
8.8/10

This is the decisive difference and it is not close. Red Wing's Heritage line is almost entirely soft-toe - beautiful boots with no ASTM safety rating, which means they are not site-legal where protective footwear is required. Thorogood's American Heritage line offers steel-toe and waterproof versions on the same resoleable storm welt.

So if you need a safety toe, Thorogood wins by default, and it also costs substantially less. The wedge sole is its real limitation - poor on ladder rungs and loose ground compared with a lugged heel.

What works

  • Safety toe plus resoleable welt construction in one boot
  • Taller shaft keeps debris out on demolition and dirt work
  • Full-grain leather that takes conditioner and keeps going

What to know

  • Steel conducts cold in winter — composite is warmer
  • 8 inch shaft takes longer to break in across the ankle
  • Heavier than the composite-toe competition

No. 2 · Leather quality and resale value

Our score
7.2/10

Red Wing's leather is genuinely at the top of the market, the construction is excellent, and the boots hold resale value in a way no other work boot does. The double leather toe cap resists scuffing better than a plain toe, and Red Wing's own shops will resole them.

But there is no safety toe and no EH rating on this model, the break-in is long and genuinely uncomfortable, and it costs considerably more than a Thorogood that does more. Buy it because you want it, not because it is the better work boot.

Our score
7.2/10

If you want a Red Wing and the Iron Ranger's narrow cap toe does not suit your foot, the round-toe Blacksmith is noticeably roomier through the forefoot and uses a Vibram 430 sole, which grips loose ground better than a plain wedge.

Still a soft toe with no safety rating, still heritage pricing, and still needs regular conditioning. The same verdict applies: a very good boot that is not a safety boot.

Where Red Wing is genuinely better

Leather. Red Wing operates its own tannery, and the hides on a Heritage boot are visibly and tangibly better than almost anything else at any price - they develop a patina rather than simply getting scuffed, and they last. The construction is also excellent, and the resale market for used Red Wings is real in a way it is not for other brands.

If you want a boot that will look better in five years than it does today and you do not need a safety toe, Red Wing is the better object. That is a legitimate reason to buy one.

Where Thorogood wins

  • Safety ratings available - steel toe, EH, waterproof variants on the same platform.
  • Price - typically substantially less for a boot that does more.
  • Out-of-box comfort - the MAXwear wedge and softer construction need far less breaking in than an Iron Ranger.
  • Shaft options - 6-inch and 8-inch, where the 8-inch earns its place on debris-heavy sites: boots for construction.

What they share, and why it matters

Both use Goodyear welt construction, which means the outsole is stitched to a welt rather than glued, and a cobbler can replace it. On a work boot the outsole is almost always what fails first, so this turns an expensive boot into a multi-year purchase - and it is the single biggest argument for either brand over a cemented boot at half the price. Work boot sole types explains the construction methods.

Both also use wedge or flat soles on their best-known models, which is excellent on flat ground and finished floors and poor on ladders and loose dirt: wedge sole vs heel. If you climb a lot, neither of these is your boot - look at the work boots hub for lugged alternatives, or consider Thorogood vs BRUNT for the value question.

The verdict, plainly

If you need a safety toe: Thorogood, and the decision is made for you. If you do not need a safety toe and want the best-made boot: Red Wing, accepting the price and the break-in. If you need a safety toe and want Red Wing leather: look at Red Wing's work line rather than Heritage, or accept that Thorogood's steel-toe Heritage is the closest thing at a fraction of the price.

Frequently asked

Is Red Wing or Thorogood better?

For a safety-rated work boot, Thorogood - its American Heritage line offers steel-toe and waterproof versions on a resoleable welt at substantially less money. For pure leather quality and resale value, Red Wing. Most Red Wing Heritage boots have no safety toe at all.

Do Red Wing Heritage boots have steel toes?

Generally no. The Heritage line - Iron Ranger, Blacksmith, Moc Toe - is overwhelmingly soft toe with no ASTM F2413 rating. Red Wing does make genuine safety boots under its separate work line, which are different products from the Heritage boots.

Are Thorogood boots as good as Red Wing?

The leather is not as good - Red Wing's own tannery produces exceptional hides. But Thorogood uses the same Goodyear welt construction, is also US-made, offers safety ratings Red Wing Heritage does not, and costs considerably less. For work, that combination wins.

Can both Red Wing and Thorogood boots be resoled?

Yes - both use Goodyear welt construction, so the outsole is stitched rather than glued and a cobbler can replace it. Since the outsole is usually what fails first on a work boot, that is what makes either brand a multi-year rather than annual purchase.
